Rune of Vengeance - A magic item
Rune of Vengeance
By Tom Gafkjen A.K.A Wingnut
Description: This appears as a three inch, black, paper thin, slanted V with two slashes through it.
Lore: These runes originated with the Fists of Vengeance. They were a religious sect devoted to the God of Justice. Their doctrine preached that justice should be provided for all and to all. Many criminals and murderers where brought to justice by their holy warriors and priests.
The Fists of Vengeance began to be prosecuted when they started preaching justice was their divine right to enforce. The sect tracked down those they felt failed to be brought to justice. They stopped bringing criminals to the courts to be tried through society's laws and themselves became judge, jury, and executioner. The breaking point was when a nobleman was cut down in the street because he reportedly killed one of his servants when the servant spilled ale on the nobleman's new shoes.
Declared outlaws in most cities, the sect lost its recruiting abilities and their influx of followers dwindled off. With only a handful of followers left, the high priest knew their good work would end when the last priest died. He gathered them together and crafted various magical weapons with the 'bane' ability. Through divine ritual he peeled off the runes that made them magical and presented them to his remaining flock. He spoke to them telling them to take them out into the world and present the runes to those that have been the subject of injustice.
Rune of Vengeance: When placed on a weapon, this magical rune will adhere to it and appear as if it is engraved on that weapon. This rune will allow a naming of someone that has committed an injustice to the rune bearer. His name will appear engraved on the blade. In doing so, the rune will give the weapon the special ability of 'Bane' when it is used against that person (+2 to hit/damage with an additional 2d6 damage). There is no limit on how many people can be named on the weapon. But he must have done something greviously wrong to the rune bearer, and his true name must be known. You cannot say that all orcs have done you injustice, but you can claim "Urtaha Dogsire of the Orc clan Blooddrinkers because he killed my father." When the rune bearer comes within 100 feet of someone named on his blade he will know the location of the one named. Once the rune is removed from a weapon, all the names that appear on that weapon disappear. Faint transmutation; CL 4th; Craft Arms and Armor; Price 8000gp.
