Clarissa’s Delay
By John Grigsby, Staff Reviewer
Though this spell was originally created by an unknown wizard, the adventuring mage Clarissa renamed it after herself and claimed ownership when she reintroduced it, having come across it while exploring the ruins of a crumbling tower.
Clarissa is a bit of an odd bird. Look for a write-up of her in a future Explorer's Guild column.
Clarissa's Delay
Transmutation
Level:Sor/Wiz 5
Components: V, S
Casting Time: 1 round
Range: See text
Target, Effect, or Area: See text
Duration: Special; see text
Saving Throw: None
Spell Resistance: No
This spell temporarily delays the effects of any spell of 4th level or lower. Targeted spells and touch spells cannot be delayed, though a spell with a range of Personal can be. Spells with a duration of Concentration cannot be delayed. You specify the delay (up to 4 rounds) by which the effects will be withheld at the time this spell is cast.
This spell is cast, followed immediately by the spell the effects of which are to be delayed. The very next spell cast by the wizard will be the spell that is affected by the delay. If no spell is begun within 1 round of the casting of this spell, the spell is wasted. The spell to be delayed can be centered anywhere within its normal range.
When the duration you have set expires, the delayed spell immediately takes effect.
Re: Clarissa’s Delay
Thanks! Always glad to receive commentary. The spell was originally developed for 2nd edition, and in setting a level when I converted it, I decided to model it after globe of invulnerability and lesser globe of invulnerability. I don't think lengthening the delay will hurt it any, but I chose to err on the side of caution.
For a sorcerer, it is a bit less than useful, but it was not intended for such originally.
Re: Clarissa’s Delay
Nice little spell. Too limited in use for a sorcerer but fun for a wizard.
Seems a little underpowered for 5th level to me. I might lengthen the time period for the delay, maybe up to 1 round per level even.
I hope to see more of these, I love creative little spells.
