Icons and Commands: Symbol Manipulation, Part Two

By Matthew Lynn

Good morning, mappers! My name is Matthew Lynn, and this is the second in an ongoing series of columns written by me, and intended to reduce the learning curve for mapping with Campaign Cartographer 2. This particular column is also the second part in my tutorial on Symbol Manipulation.

What will you need for this tutorial? First, Campaign Cartographer 2 from Profantasy, Inc (sorry, if you have Campaign Mapper, you will need to upgrade to CC2). If you haven't upgraded to CC2 Pro, this won't be of much use to you. Second, you need to have read Part 1, and preferably completed my first tutorial, Symbol Creation.

Now, enough chatter, let's get back to work. If you did my Symbol Creation tutorial, you should have a copy of the Wizards Lab.fsc symbol catalog. If you didn't do that tutorial, go and do it! Or you can download the catalog here.

Icons & Commands

(in order as they appear in the text)

Command Summary
OK, now that you have Wizards Lab.fsc, open it. CC2 should open up smoothly. Type SYMMGR at the command prompt. The Symbol Manager dialog will open up. See Image 1.

You should now be back where we left off in part 1. If you don't recall where that was, go back and read it!;)

First in this part, is the "Move Up" & "Move Down" buttons. These are more of those buttons that will not enable until you have selected a symbol. If you haven't done so, do it! Now, if your selection was Summoner's Circle, clicking "Move Up" will move it into the first position. If you clicked Demon's Footprints, "Move Down" will move it to the end of the catalog. Fairly simple, though can be annoying when you have to move a symbol from one end of a hundred count catalog to the other!

Next on our tour, is the "Replace" button. Again, you must first select a symbol to enable this button. This button is very handy. It opens up a dialog (see Image 2.) that lets you replace your chosen symbol with the symbol of your choice. Very handy for quickly cycling out a bunch of trees, or stair symbols in a large map. Or even some kind of place holding symbol.

As you can see by looking at Image 2, I've been busy working on a new symbol catalog! It's called Wizard's Study, and is from the Mysaniti Cartographers Guild. OK, back to work. Your selected symbol can be found in the text box at the top of the dialog. If this isn't the right one, cancel now! The warning is very sincere! This command can easily screw your maps up. The two check boxes are identical to the ones described at the beginning of Part 1. To chose a replacement symbol, select the replacement symbol from the list to the right.

Next is the dreaded "Purge". Wait a minute, this isn't the political version. This one only purges unused symbol definitions from your map. So you're safe, even if you disagree with your local government. Three things to remember with this command:

     1)It can't be undone.

2)It doesn't remove symbols used in a Fill Style. The Fill Styles that reference that symbol must first be deleted, or you will encounter problems later on.

3)NEVER EVER use this command on a symbol catalog unless you are positive you want to risk wiping everything clean. I once lost a weeks work this way. It was a bummer.

"Import" is our next stop. No duties will need to be paid on this particular import, but it is handy! This one is very handy if you wish to combine two or more symbol catalog's. You can quickly import all the definitions from one catalog into another. This is also handy for quickly importing a symbol catalog into a map you are working on. Personally, I don't do this very often, it becomes confusing when the number of symbols you are digging through is around 400. "Purge" comes in handy then...

"Convert" is similar to "Import", with one big exception. It opens up a CC2 drawing, and convert's the contents (the entities) of the drawing into symbols in the open catalog. Very handy if you're converting a bunch of CC2 parts into symbols, or a particularly sweet drawing. Clicking this button opens up another dialog. See Image 3.

As you can see, this dialog is rather slim on nice functions. Be great if Profantasy had included a "Browse" button, huh? Of well, this is the real reason Microsoft included the Location entry on the File Properties dialog! Guess someone up there loves CC2 users! The Note tells you everything you need to now to use this dialog.

The last two command buttons are really self explanatory. They are "Help" and "OK." "Help" opens the CC2 Help files, and "OK" closes out the dialog, preserving your changes. This is a temporary preservation, because if you forget to Save, they will be lost!

Well, that's a wrap for this tutorial! Please come back in the future to read the rest of my fellow's tutorials, and any new ones from me! Oh, and don't forget to visit the Mysaniti Cartographers Guild for great maps & symbols! Previews can be found here. Until we meet again!
